To sign up for a class contact Field Art Studio or the Society of Gilders (SOG).   As a regional educational center for the Society of Gilders, Field Art Studio offers the following classes:

  • Traditional water gilding
  • Mordant (Oil) gilding
  • Ornament replacement
  • Toning a frame surface

Metal Leaf Gilding

Date: October 11-12, 2008 (10am-5pm)
Location: Field Art Studio, 24242 Woodward Ave., Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069 (Detroit Metro area) Short Description: The class covers the basics of surface preparation and the application of metal leaf (brass, aluminum, broken leaf, bronze powder) and the gilding of an 8" x 10" pictures frame with metal leaf. Materials are included.

Traditional Water Gilding

Date: October 4-5, 2008
Location: Field Art Studio, 24242 Woodward Ave., Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069 (Detroit Metro area) Short Description: The class covers the basics of burnished water gilding through the preparation of rabbit skin glue, gesso, bole; the application of these materials and the gilding of an 8”x10” picture frame with 22k gold. Materials and a gilding tool kit are included.

Ornament Restoration

Date: October 18-19, 2008 (10am-5pm)
Location: Field Art Studio, 24242 Woodward Ave., Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069 (Detroit Metro area)
Short Description: This class will cover the basics on how replace missing compo ornaments, making molds and casting; repairing gesso losses; and matching tone of repairs. Basic gilding skills are required. Students will work on actual antique frames in class or bring your own frame.

Materials Fee: $116.00 a wooden picture frame, 8” x 10,” chopped and joined; 1 book of 22k gold leaf, cheese cloth, horse hair cloth, 1lb.whiting, wet dry sand paper, cotton, mica powder, rabbit skin glue, Selhamin red clay, shellac, rottenstone, pumice powder, raw and burnt umber earth pigments.

2 brushes, a gilder’s tip, pad, an agate burnisher, a gilder’s knife, a mop and a Monarch color chart.
